Age ofBoom

Out-sail. Out-gun. Sink them.

Loud, pixel-art naval combat in the age of sail. Your cannons fire from the side, so positioning is aiming: get your broadside on them before theirs is on you.

Positioning is aiming

No crosshair. Your guns fire from the beam, so the fight is won at the helm: wind, momentum and turn rate.

Every hit is a show

Balls arc through the air, hulls splinter, sails tear, magazines go up and ships roll over and sink.

Readable at a glance

Class, damage, fire, torn sails and the loaded side all show on the ship itself. No guessing, just shooting.

Gameplay

Watch it burn

The fleet

From sloop to galleon

Sink and plunder for gold, then buy bigger hulls, more cannons and better shot. Point at a ship and it comes about to face you. Every class beats a fully upgraded ship of the class below, but a sloop still out-runs them all.

Sloop

Quick, nimble, out-runs anything that floats.

The arsenal

Pick your poison

Round shot

DMG 12 RNG 220

Long range, honest damage. The default for a reason.

Chain shot

DMG 6 RNG 176

Shreds sails. A ship with torn canvas limps along at half speed.

Grape shot

DMG 6 x3 RNG 121

A shotgun blast at close range. Every pellet kills crew and slows their reload.

Fire shot

DMG 8 + burn RNG 220

Sets the target alight. Burning ships blow their magazines far more often.

Powder magazine

And sometimes, boom.

A ship sunk under fire can blow its magazine: a fireball, a shockwave and burning debris that hurt everything nearby, and can set off the next ship's magazine too. Fire shot makes it far more likely.

The sea fights back

Wind, fog, night and ice

  • Wind

Fastest on a beam reach, crawling into the wind. The sea pushes back.

  • Fog banks

Drifting fog hides ships until you're right on top of them.

  • Smoke screens

Lay a cloud astern, break the line of sight, come about.

  • Night

Only lanterns, fires and muzzle flashes give a ship away.

  • Arctic

Ice floes to hide behind, crack with round shot, or ram.

  • Reefs

Light hulls sail over them. Deep hulls run aground.

Every ship, explosion, wave and button in Age of Boom (and on this page) is drawn with PAGAN, the Pixel Art Grammar And Notation: voxel hulls rendered in 32 headings, sails that furl and tear, team colours by palette swap, all built from text source files.
